On a winter evening in 1170 an archbishop is murdered in his own cathedral.  William, a reluctant novice at Canterbury is present at the murder, and can also identify the secret conspirator who has helped the killers. This proves dangerous knowledge as he now has a powerful enemy determined to silence him.
