Chessmen

On a wild remote Atlantic beach, four sets of Chessmen are discovered nearly 200 years ago.  Each piece carved from walrus ivory or a whales’ tooth, with kings, queens, bishops, knights and Vikings.  But who made them, who were they for, and why they were hidden is a complete mystery ? Some are now in museums, but not all of them.

So there are two sagas.

A medieval saga which follows a young stonemason from the far north who travels to the great cities of the east and becomes the greatest carver of chess pieces ever.  An adventure from Norway to the Holy Land, but which ends with his masterpieces being hidden in Uig Bay on the Isle of Lewis. 

Also, a modern saga which goes back in time from the present day to the discovery of the chessmen.
